American Institutions of Democracy

"The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands' American Institituions of Democracy Project works to enhance the public's appreciation of the nature and function of democractic institutions.

"The project focuses on educating people about the history, current state, and challenges facing the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, the press, and the public schools. Commissions of scholars have synthesized what is known about the institutions, identified research priorities, and have disseminated their findings to scholars and the public through volumes published by Oxford University Press."

Executive Branch Commission

"The commission on the executive branch, chaired by Joel Aberbach and Mark Peterson, aimed to provide a sophisticated understanding of the evolution of the presidency and the administrative agencies, an analysis of how this branch works today, and an exploration of proposed reforms for making the executive branch more prepared to meet challenges of the current era. The commission addressed topics including the nature of executive power, the bureaucracy's role in policy decision making and implementation, and the complex relationships between the components of the executive branch and the other institutions of American government.
