- 53 In 1984, the National Social Science Survey asked respondents whether they agreed that big business has too much power; 62 per cent agreed. The Australian Election Study asked the same question in 1987 (51 per cent agreed); 1990 (62 per cent agreed); 1993 (62 per cent agreed); 1996 (65 per cent agreed); 1998 (71 per cent agreed); and 2001 (72 per cent agreed). In 2003, the Australian Survey of Social Attitudes asked a slightly different question: whether big business should have more or less power. Only six per cent of over 4000 respondents wanted more or a lot more power in the hand of big business, while a third settled for the same amount of power.
