Biographical Information

"I work often in association with Performance Consultants International (founding partner, Sir John Whitmore), Performance Consultants France and other niche consultancies such as Irving Allan. I teach on the PCI Executive Coach Programme in the UK and the Diploma in Executive Coaching at the Irish Management Institute in Dublin, and am accredited to deliver the internationally recognised Bar-On EQi psychometric. I am fluent and coach in French; my Italian is still good and comes back quickly once I am in the country!

"In addition to the executive programmes I design and deliver, I facilitate strategic meetings, development away days and conflict resolution sessions. My approach is holistic, spanning work, life and strategic development issues. Taking a systems perspective in my work, I view the individual or team within their organisational and current contexts. I am keen to help individuals and organisations realise their full potential through real action for change, and I enjoy working with a creative mix of intellectual challenge, humour, energy and quiet reflection — my toolkit includes imagery and storytelling for deep personal engagement.

"I am a trained transpersonal psychotherapist and, while I draw clear boundaries between the therapeutic and coaching remit, this deeper understanding underpins my coaching work. My training at the Psychosynthesis and Education Trust (PET) gave me a model that sees the emotional and the spiritual on a continuum rather than separate, and which values our future, our potential and our actions in the world as much as it values learning from past difficulties, and listening to our feelings and thoughts. I was later involved in training student therapists at the Trust and served on their Training Management Committee during periods of major re-structuring. I was a trustee at Metanoia and subsequently at the PET for a number of years.

"As founding Director of the Parenting Education & Support Forum (now Parenting UK), I developed the organisation over the first five years to rapidly become the major umbrella body for the field. As such, I undertook all leadership, managerial, fundraising and strategic responsibilities and played an important role in the development of local and national policies, collaborating with a range of organisations and government departments. I served on their trustee board for a further six years.

"My career has spanned the arts, health and organisational development. I co-established a successful London contemporary art gallery, then worked as a journalist for 8 years, writing features on the arts, health and women in work for national magazines and newspapers. I held editorial positions at the Sunday Times Magazine and Time Out, and have written, co-written and co-edited a number of books since the 1980's (see the selection below).

"I have chaired numerous conferences and seminars nationally and have radio and television experience, both as a best-selling author (of Dieting Makes You Fat) and as Director of the Parenting Forum. I was the presenter of the first series of a successful live television counselling programme which continued for several series (A Problem Aired, Thames Television, 1987).

"Since 2003 I have been a core member of Be The Change Initiative, a non-profit social change organisation which addresses the interconnected dimensions of sustainability: environment, social justice and personal/spiritual fulfilment. We deliver Symposia and Facilitator Trainings throughout the UK and are affiliated with the Pachamama Alliance in the US. I am passionate about how business can participate in shaping a better world for all.

"I have recently been invited to join the faculty of the Institute for Transformational Futures, based at Falmouth University. The ITF's core purpose is to explore the nature of transformation and how it can facilitated in different sectors of society, creating access to new futures. This is based on the understanding that the path to transformation lies in the integration of inner development and outer action."
