Guillermo O'Donnell

Guillermo O'Donnell "is Senior Faculty Fellow of the Kellog Institute for International Studies, University of Notre Dame, since 1997. Previously, from 1992 until 1997, he was the Academic Director of the Kellog Institute. He has been Senior Visiting Fellow in Politics of the Nuffield College at Oxford (2003/04) and since 1995 he is Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

"Mr O’Donnell was Vice President of the American Political Science Association from 1999 and 2000 and President of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) between 1988 and 1991. He has been fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study, and visiting professor of the Universities of California (Berkeley), Michigan (Ann Arbor) and Sao Paulo. He has also been Director of the Center of Studies on State and Society (CEDES) in Argentina, and senior researcher at the University Institute of Research of Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ) and the Brazilian Centre of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP) in Brazil.

"His research and teaching interests are focused on democratic theory, comparative democracy and democratization, Latin America 's politics and society, and relationships between legal and political theory.

"Guillermo O’Donnell has received a number of awards including the medal of Ordem do Mérito Cultural of Brazil (2002); Kalman Silvert Award of the Latin American Studies Association for “lifetime contributions” in the study of Latin America (2003) and doctorate honoris causa from the National University of Rosario (1995).

"He has published works extensively on authoritarianism, democratization, and democratic theory. His books include Modernization and Bureaucratic-Authoritarianism (1972); Transitions from Authoritarian Rule, with Philippe Schmitter and Laurence Whitehead, (1986); Issues in Democratic Consolidation: The New South American Democracies in Comparative Perspective (1992); and Poverty and Inequality in Latin America (1998). In 1999 he published Counterpoints, Selected Essays on Authoritarianism and Democratization (1999); The Quality of Democracy. Theory and Practice (2004)." [1]
