Georges A. Fauriol

Georges A. Fauriol was appointed Vice President of Strategic Planning for the International Republican Institute (IRI) in September 2001. In this capacity, his responsibilities include program development, leadership development, project evaluation and development of IRI's annual strategic plan.

Prior to joining IRI, Fauriol served as director and senior fellow of the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), where he was the senior scholar specializing in Western Hemisphere issues—the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America, and Canada. While at CSIS, Fauriol co-chaired with Ambassador Otto Reich the Americas Forum, a Washington network of hemispheric policy professionals. Additionally, Fauriol served as the Mexico Seminar Course Chair at the U.S. Department of State's Foreign Service Institute from 1992 to 2000.

Prior to his long-standing affiliation with CSIS, Fauriol worked with the Foreign Policy Research Institute, the U.S. Information Agency, and the Inter-American Development Bank. Since the early 1980s he has been active with the Florida Association of Voluntary Agencies for Caribbean Action. He is a Research Council member of the Center for a Free Cuba, and has served as an Adjunct Senior Research Associate at the University of Miami's North-South Center. He is frequently called upon as a consultant to government agencies and has testified before Senate and House subcommittees eighteen times. Fauriol lectures before university audiences, U.S. service academies, local civic groups, and participates actively in Washington's think tank community discussions. For the past two decades he has also been active in democratization initiatives and election observation efforts overseas. He is a member of the Chairman's Club of the Republican National Committee.

Fauriol is the author or coauthor of several books and over 50 publications, including The Cuban Revolution (Westview, 1984), Guatemala's Political Puzzle (Transaction Books, 1988), The Third Century: U.S.-Latin American Policy Choices in the 1990s (CSIS, 1988), Cuba, The International Dimension (Transaction Books, 1990), Haitian Frustrations (CSIS, 1995), Thinking Strategically about 2005: the United States and South America (CSIS, 1999) and Fast Forward: Latin America on the Edge of the Twenty-first Century (Transaction Books, 1997, 1999). His articles have appeared in such publications as The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, Baltimore Sun, Christian Science Monitor, Orbis, and Foreign Affairs.

Born in France, he grew up in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Chicago, Ill. Fauriol received a M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.A. from Ohio University.
