George Washington Hill: Defense

Biography

George Washington Hill was President of American Tobacco Co. in 1929 (Playboy 1/87). He was the son of former President of American Tobacco Co. Percival Hill (E. Whelan 1984). George Washinton Hill developed Lucky Strike cigarettes (E. Whelan 1984). He hired public relations expert Edward Bernays to revere taboo against women smoking in public. Bernays solicited a number of New York debutantes to make a political gesture for women's rights by marching in the 1929 Easter Parade, smoking. (Playboy 1/87).
