"George B. Munroe is retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Phelps Dodge Corporation, a natural resources company of Newmont Mining Corporation. Mr. Munroe is a Director of The New York Times Company. He served as a Director of Newmont Mining Corporation. From December 1983 to April 1994, Mr. Munroe served as a Director of Santa Fe Pacific Corporation (until September 1994, the parent of the Corporation). He served as a Director of Newmont Gold Co. since 1997. ... He served as a Director of Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp. in 1994 and was a member of Audit, Executive and Policy Committees." [1]
In 1988 the New York Times reported: "George B. Munroe was elected to the board of The New York Times Company yesterday at the annual shareholders meeting.
"Mr. Munroe, who is 66 years old, was until last year the chairman of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, the largest producer of copper in the United States. He has served on the board of Phelps Dodge since 1966 and currently is chairman of the finance committee." [2]
