Geoffrey Ashton was a geneticist and researcher denied funding by Council for Tobacco Research. He was initially invited by Council for Tobacco Research to study whether there might be a genetic factor underlying smoking behavior. His study was never funded.

Biography

Dr. Geoffrey Ashton was a researcher. In 1976, research Ashton was invited by Edwin Jacob of the Council for Tobacco Research/Special Projects division to study whether there might be some genetic factor underlying both smoking and certain diseases, but the study was never funded. Edwin Jacob told him "the presidents of the tobacco companies had turned down the proposal because they didn't think the outcome would be useful to them."(Wall Street Journal, 2/11/93) (Source: Multi-State Deposition Team - Identified Individuals May 9, 1997)
