Flora MacDonald "was first elected to the Parliament of Canada in October, 1972 and served as Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands until November, 1988.

"During that time she held three cabinet posts: Secretary of State for External Affairs, Minister of Employment and Immigration, Minister of Communications and Culture.

"Prior to her election to Parliament, Miss MacDonald was Administrative Assistant and Tutor in the Department of Political Studies at Queen's University, Kingston, Canada.

"Since leaving the elected political scene, MacDonald has been Special Advisor to the Commonwealth of Learning, a distance-education facility spanning the Commonwealth (1990-1991) and Chairperson of the following organizations:

"International Development Research Centre (IDRC) (1992-97); HelpAge International(1996-2001); Shastri Indo-Canada Advisory Council (1997-2004); Partnership Africa-Canada (2002-2004).

"She served on the Carnegie Commission on the Prevention of Deadly Conflict (1994-1999). She is currently Chairperson of Future Generations, Franklin, WV, USA.

"In addition, she is on the Board of Advisory Council of the following organizations: Canadian Council for Refugees and CARE Canada.

"Flora MacDonald was named Officer of the Order of Canada in April,1993, and Companion of the Order of Canada, April, 1999; Order of Ontario, 1995." [1]
