Ellen Tauscher works in the State Department

Ellen O'Kane Tauscher is the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security since June 2009. A Democrat, Tauscher previously was a U.S. Representative for the 10th Congressional district of California 1997 to 2009.[1]

Iraq War

Tauscher voted for the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 that started the Iraq War.[2]

Support for gun control

Tauscher cosponsored H.R. 1022 (Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2007) on March 15, 2007.[3]

Biography

Tauscher was born November 15, 1951 in Newark, New Jersey. She was educated at Seton Hall University and was an investment banker and member of the New York Stock Exchange. After moving to California in 1989, she founded the first national research service to help parents verify the background of childcare workers.

Tauscher was active in Democratic circles as a fundraiser before challenging 10th District Congressman Bill Baker in 1996. Tauscher was able to paint Baker as too conservative for the district and won a razor-thin victory. She managed to win solid victories in 1998 and 2000 against vigorous Republican opposition, even though the 10th was widely considered the most Republican of the Bay Area districts. Redistricting after the 2000 census cut out some of the more Republican parts of the district, enabling Tauscher to win reelection in 2002 and 2004 without serious opposition.

Positions and views

Tauscher is a leading moderate Democrat. She is vice-chairwoman of the Democratic Leadership Council and is also a member of the Blue Dog Coalition.

2006 elections

In 2006, the Republicans nominated Darcy Linn to face Tauscher in her November 2006 bid for reelection. (See U.S. congressional elections in 2006) [1] Tauscher retained her seat.
