Edgar Hoskins Harwood was an employee of the R.J. Reynolds tobacco company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina circa 1930-1972.
Biography
He graduated from North Carolina State College and in 1930 was hired as the company's first bona fide chemist, employed to work in the flavoring department. In 1949 Edgar H. Harwood was superintendent of the chemical department where he was assisted by Charles M. Sprinkle. At that time, with 51 employees and one clerk-typist, the chemical department was part of the manufacturing division and was organized into sections consisting of chemical engineering--the largest--instrument development, glass shop, research project development, moisture control, analytical laboratory, organic research laboratory, metallurgy, chemical manufacturing, and 200 by-products where nicotine sulphate was developed.[1] [2]
