Earth Hour was a joint project of WWF Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald and the advertising agency Leo Burnett that was launched in 2007. The focus of the even was to encourage individuals and businesses to turn off their lights between 7.30pm to 8.30pm on 31 March 2007 "as a sign of their commitment to reduce global warming." [1]

In the wake of the "success" of the 2007 event, the organisers have launched it as a global event scheduled for March 29, 2008. As of January 2008, Earth Hour claims that "cities from across Europe, North America, Asia and Asia Pacific, including Chicago, Copenhagen, Manila, Melbourne, Sydney, Tel Aviv and Toronto" have been designated as "the flagship participants."[2]
