Deanna Kemp is a Senior Research Fellow at Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining. "For the past 15 years her work and research has concentrated on the social impacts of large-scale industry (primarily mining). At CSRM she focuses on relationships between mining companies and local communities, including issues such as company-community disputes, community participation in resource development and industry responses to community relations and development challenges.

"Previously, Deanna worked at BHP Billiton in both corporate and operational environments. Her tenure as Manager Social Policy for global headquarters involved policy and standard setting as well as site capacity building in community relations and development. She has also worked as an independent social assessor for Newmont Mining and Oxiana. Much of this work has been international at large-scale projects in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Laos, Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

"While Deanna has undertaken much work that has contributed to improved industry performance, she continues to engage with civil society organizations and community groups affected by mining to ensure non-industry perspectives inform her work. For example, she worked closely with Oxfam Australia to help facilitate an exposure program in India that sought to build understanding of the human rights dimensions of mining amongst groups of mining executives.

"Deanna holds a PhD from the University of Queensland, a Masters of Social Science in development studies from RMIT University and holds post-graduate qualifications in industrial relations from Griffith University. She is a member of the International Association of Impact Assessment. As a certified Sustainability Assurance Practitioner she has participated in four rounds of assurance and verification work for Westpac Banking’s annual sustainability report." [1]
