David Michael Burns, M.D. was a pulmonologist at the University of California San Diego, and has served as a Plaintiff's Expert. A Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, he was the Coordinator of the Developmental Pulmonary Clinical Research Laboratory.

Biography

Dr. Burns received his doctorate in medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1972. He trained in Internal Medicine on the Harvard Medical Service at Boston City Hospital from 1972 through 1974. He received his training in Pulmonary Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine from 1976 through 1979. He has been on the faculty at the University of California, San Diego since 1979. His speciality is lung disease and caring for sick smokers.

Dr. Burns was the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy (Burns C.V.) and a Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Pulmonary Division, University of California--San Diego Medical Center, 200 West Arbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92103-8475 (Orleans & Slade; Burns C.V.). He is board certified in internal medicine pulmonary medicine, and critical care medicine (Secretary Sharon 5/5/94). He testified for the plaintiffs in Horton and Wilks cases. He was senior reviewer of several Surgeon General reports on smoking, Scientific Editor, Surgeon General's Report (1980-1983), Senior Scientific Editor Surgeon General's Report (1984-1987), Senior reviewer of the Surgeon General's Reports on Smoking and Health (1987-present) (Burns C.V.). He was a contributor to all Surgeon General reports on smoking since 1975. He runs coronary care unit at a hospital in San Diego. His specialty is mechanical ventilation/intensive care/critical care of smokers (Secretary Sharon 5/5/94). He is a graduate of Harvard Medical School (1972) (Burns C.V.) He spoke at the Castano PLC meeting in Miami 4/30/94. He was a contributor to Orleans & Slade Nicotine Addiction (1993). Dr. David Burns is board certified in pulmonary medicine. (State of Florida's Proposed Plaintiff's Disclosure of Expert Witnesses, 2/5/97) He has knowledge of the human diseases related to cigarette smoking.
