Sir Charles Ellis was appointed Scientific Advisor to the Board BATCo in 1955. He gave up his post in January 1971 and remained on as a BATco consultant. [1]
He is reported to have said, "…smoking is a habit of addiction …nicotine is a very fine drug." BAT, 1962)[2][3]
In 1961 he wrote, "Smoking demonstrably is a habit based on a combination of psychological and physiological pleasure, and it also has strong indications of being an addiction. It differs in important features from addiction to other alkaloid druge, but yet there are sufficient similarities to justify stating that smokers are nicotine addicts."[4]
