Charles B. Renfrew

Judge Renfrew "graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University in 1952 and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1956, where he was a member of the Law review and Order of the Coif. He served in the United States Navy (1946 – 1948) and was a forward observer in Korea for the United States Army (1952 – 1953).

"He joined Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro in 1956, becoming a partner in 1965. In February 1972, he was appointed Unites States District Judge for the Northern District of California, where he served until February 1980. In 1980-1981, Judge Renfrew was Deputy Attorney General of the United States in Washington, D.C. Thereafter, he joined Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro for two years. In 1983, he became Vice President of Chevron Corporation, responsible for its legal affairs, and in 1984, a Director. After retiring from Chevron, he was a partner at LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae from 1993-1997.

"Among his many professional associations, Mr. Renfrew has served as President of the American College of Trial Lawyers, as well as a Fellow, Regent and Treasurer. He was Vice Chairman of the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association, and is currently on its Standing Committee on Federal Judiciary. He served as a member of the American Law Institute, the American Judicature Society, the Association of General Counsel, the Legal Advisory Committee of the New York Stock Exchange, and as Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, as Chairman of the Advisory Board of International and Comparative Law Center of the Southwestern Legal Foundation, as Chairman of the General Committee on Law, American Petroleum Institute, and as Chairman of the Special Committee to Study the Problem of Discovery of the Federal Judicial Center. He taught trial advocacy and other courses at Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California at Berkeley, California. In March of 2001, Mr. Renfrew became a member of ADR Chambers International.

"Judge Renfrew has been active in a wide range of community organizations, including service on the boards of Princeton University, Claremont University Center, the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Lawyer Committee for Civil Rights and the Council for Civic Unity. He has also served as a board member on a number of for-profit corporations."
