"As one of the country's most senior career diplomats, with extensive experience in Latin America and the Caribbean, Ambassador Tony Gillespie was principal producer of the 34-nation Summit of the Americas 1994. He led the State Department effort to achieve implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1993. After distinguished service as Ambassador to Colombia and then Chile, he served on the White House Staff as Special Assistant to the President and as the National Security Council's Senior Director for Latin America. While exercising policy responsibility for the Caribbean as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for InterAmerican Affairs in 1983, ...President (Ronald Reagan) named Gillespie Ambassador and Chief of Mission in Grenada as U.S. forces initiated operations there. In addition to his ambassadorial posts in Chile, Colombia and Grenada, in the Americas Tony Gillespie has served in Mexico and Nicaragua. He has held senior management positions in the State Department and assignments in Germany, The Philippines, Indonesia and Belgium, including the U.S. NATO Mission. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and did graduate work at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Public Affairs. He is also a graduate of the National War College. He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army before beginning his diplomatic career. Tony Gillespie retired from the U.S. Foreign Service with the rank of Career Minister in March 1995."[2]
