Britain in Europe was launched on 14 October 1999 by a historic cross-party coalition of the prime minister, Tony Blair; the chancellor of the exchequer, Gordon Brown; the former deputy prime minister, Michael Heseltine; the former chancellor of the exchequer, Kenneth Clarke; and the leader of the Liberal Democrat party, Charles Kennedy. In a statement dated 17 August 2005, the Britain in Europe website stated that, following the French and Dutch 'No' vote to the European Constitution, 'Britain in Europe will, in effect, cease campaigning'. The website provides a single link to 'our sister organisation' the European Movement.
