"Bohdan-Volodymyr Hawrylyshyn passed away. He was a public activist, scholar, member of the Club of Rome, a philanthropist.

"As a representative of the Open Society Institute in Ukraine in 1990, Bogdan D. played a significant role in establishing the Ukrainian-American Renaissance Foundation. One year later he was elected the Supervisory Board Chairman of the International Renaissance Foundation and managed the Foundation till 1998.

"As a person of a difficult destiny, Bohdan Hawrylyshyn survived wartime hardships during the World War II, stayed in the camp for displaced persons and emigrated to Canada where he worked as a logger. He was a trade union activist. He had been organizing evening classes for Ukrainians.

"As an active person, Bogdan D. achieved a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Geneva. Back in perestroika times, he began his volunteer work in Ukraine. After proclaiming the Independence, he was an adviser to several Presidents, Prime Ministers, heads of the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine. Most recently, keeping faith in democratic transformations in Ukraine, he became one of the participants of the December First Initiative Group. He made an outstanding contribution in support of the Ukrainian children and youth movement.

"George Soros, founder of the International Renaissance Foundation, sent his condolences: “Bohdan Hawrylyshyn was a committed Ukrainian patriot. I am glad he lived to see the changes that he did so much to help set in motion”.

"We will remember his contribution in the development of the new Ukraine.

"The staff of the International Renaissance Foundation and its founder George Soros express sincere condolences to the family and friends of Bohdan Hawrylyshyn." [1]
