A year later he took an M.A. from Duke University, and proceeded to take M.Litt. and Ph.D. degrees in English literature from Oxford University. In 1961, at age 25, he began teaching at Duke and by age 36 was named Duke’s Vice-Provost and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

"In 1992, Governor Ann Richards picked him to serve as US Senator from Texas when Lloyd Bentsen became Secretary of the Treasury. When he lost that seat in a special election in 1993, President Clinton appointed him Ambassador to Burundi. In 1996, he was appointed as Ambassador to Botswana and as Special Representative of the Secretary of State to the Southern African Development Community. Upon completing those assignments in December 1999, he was named Visiting Research Fellow at Merton College, Oxford University, specifically to write a book about his African experience.
