Ayuba Wabba
"Ayuba Philibus Wabba was elected President of the ITUC at its 4th World Congress in Copenhagen in December 2018. He is the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), a position he has occupied since 2015. He is the first ITUC President from an African country.
"Ayuba was born in 1968 in Borno State, Nigeria. He cut his teeth in the popular struggle very early in life as a student union activist. While studying, he was elected President of the National Union of Health Technology Students. Since then, Ayuba has accumulated thirty years of experience in the trade union movement.His first trade union position followed his election as State Secretary of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Borno State Council.
"Following a number of successes in his home state of Borno, he was given the confidence of workers at the national level with his election as National President of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria. Moving from a sectoral focus, Ayuba was elected as National Treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in 2007.
"He currently serves as a member of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization and has been appointed a board member of many public and private organisations, including the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, the National Health Insurance Scheme, the National Labour Advisory Council, the University of Nigeria Enugu Teaching Hospital and the National Productivity Centre.
"Ayuba qualified as a Member of the National Institute (MNI) and holds a Master of Public Health (MPH). He also holds the highly revered traditional titles of the Fiwagboye of Orile-Ifo and the Zanna Ma’alama of Borno Emirate."[1]
