Biographical Information

"Andrew Cahn has been Chief Executive of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) since March 2006. Previously, he twice worked in the FCO at the UK's Permanent Representation to the European Union and was Deputy Head of the European Secretariat in the Cabinet Office in the mid-nineties.

"From 1984-1988 Andrew also worked for the European Commission where he was part of the team responsible for planning and delivering the 1992 Single Market Programme in the cabinet of Lord Cockfield. He returned to the Commission in 1997 as Chef de Cabinet (Chief of Staff) for Neil Kinnock, and Vice President of the Commission and European Commissioner for Transport. He joined British Airways in 2000 as their Director of Government and Industry Affairs and is also a Trustee of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation." [1]

"In 2011, Andrew retired from government service and became Vice Chairman of Nomura International. He is also a Board member of Lloyd’s of London, General Dynamics (UK), the Start-Up Loans Company and he is Chairman of the Advisory Board of Huawei Technologies (UK). He is also Chair of the City of London’s International Trade and Investment Group and sits on the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Financial Services Trade and Investment Board.

"Andrew has been a Trustee of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation for 19 years and is also a Trustee of the Institute for Government, the Arvon Foundation and the Japan Society. He is a member of the Advisory Boards of Asia House, the University of the Arts and Business for New Europe and an Association Member of BUPA.

"Andrew was a Trustee of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Chair of its Audit Committee from 2002-08. He has been involved in international negotiations on the Law of the Sea Conference, the Biodiversity Convention, the Antarctic Marine Living Resources Convention and the Atlantic Salmon Convention. He is a passionate mountain and long-distance walker and runs his own allotment. He holidays in the mountain wilderness of the Adirondacks and in France with his wife, Virginia Beardshaw, who is Chief Executive to the children’s communications charity, I Can. They have three grown up children and have lived in the same house in North London for 35 years." [2]
