Amerigroup is a Fortune 500 health insurance company. It began as Americaid Community Care in 1994 and was initially aimed at the health care problems of children, mothers and pregnant women enrolled in Medicaid. Amerigroup has a history of declining services to low-income pregnant women in Illinois from 2001 to 2003. [1]

Ties to the American Legislative Exchange Council

Amerigroup has been a corporate funder of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and a member of ALEC's Health and Human Services Task Force.[2] Amerigroup's Vice President of Business Development, Pam Perry, received ALEC's "Private Sector Member of the Year Award" at the 2012 annual meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.[3] See ALEC Corporations for more.

About ALEC
ALEC is a corporate bill mill. It is not just a lobby or a front group; it is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators their wishlists to benefit their bottom line. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC's operations. They pay for a seat on ALEC task forces where corporate lobbyists and special interest reps vote with elected officials to approve “model” bills.
