The American Lung Association (ALA) is a voluntary nonprofit health organization originally founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis. As education, prevention and improvements in medical treatment caused tuberculosis to wane as a problem nationally, ALA broadened its mission to fighting lung disease and promoting lung health in general, with emphases on asthma, tobacco control and environmental health issues like clean indoor and outdoor air.
The American Lung Association has long been a foe of the tobacco industry.
The American Lung Association filed an amicus curiae brief in the Forester MN suit.
