Alliance of Small Island States and climate change negotiations

The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) is a coalition of small island and low-lying coastal countries comprising 43 countries and observers spanning Africa, the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean, the Pacific and South China Sea. AOSIS has been particularly prominent in the promoting the need for an effective United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
At a January 2005 meeting Port Louis, Mauritius, AOSIS members resolved to "commit ourselves to fully implementing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and to further promoting international cooperation on climate change". The conference report noted that "small island developing States believe that they are already experiencing major adverse effects of climate change. Adaptation to adverse impacts of climate change and sea-level rise remains a major priority for small island developing States."[1]
