2UE's bid to Bypass Anti-Vilification Laws
In November 2006 2UE argued in a case before the Administrative Decisions Tribunal that an implied right to free speech in the Australian constitution meant that New South Wales anti-vilification laws should be ruled invalid. 2UE advanced the argument in response to two complaints made that station presenters had breached the anti-vilification provisions of the Anti-Discrimination Act. One complaint related to presenters John Laws and Steve Price describing a gay couple appearing in a reality TV show as "poofs" and "grubby" in 2003. Another complaint related to comments made by Laws in 2004 in which he described the gay host of another reality TV show as a "pillow biter" and "pompous little pansy prick." 2UE's appeal concluded in November 2006 and the three Court of Appeal judges have reserved their decision.
