According to its website, Japan Policy Research Institute (JPRI) was founded by Chalmers Johnson and Steven C. Clemons, and is "a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the promotion of understanding of Japan's political and economic behavior and growing significance in world affairs."
Its mission statement continues, "Despite our name, it was never our intent to focus exclusively on Japan, and over the years JPRI has published many articles about China, Korea, southeast Asia, and inner Asia. JPRI is a non-profit, 501c3 organization....Our board and officers all serve without pay, and our web site is maintained with the generous assistance of the University of San Francisco's Center for the Pacific Rim."
