Believe in People is a Koch-backed 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, which means that it can legally funnel up to half of its spending into political campaigning. Believe in People's IRS employer identification number (EIN) was previously used by the Koch group TSN Institute. The organization’s purpose, according to its tax filings, is to “create a unique network committed to unleashing the potential of principled, next generation entrepreneurs, and philanthropists to create a free and open society with opportunities for all.”[1] The name comes from the title of one of Koch’s books — Believe in People: Bottom-Up Solutions for a Top-Down World (2020) — co-authored by Brian Hooks, the CEO of Stand Together, in which Koch “expresses some regret for his lifetime of funding divisive, heavily partisan politics.”[2]

It was reported in 2023 that Charles Koch had quietly transferred $5.3 billion of his conglomerate’s nonvoting stock to Believe in People and another one of his nonprofits, called CCKC4.[3]

The organization is run by Derek Johnson, executive director of Stand Together Trust; Dale Gibbens; and Brian Menkes, general counsel at the Charles Koch Foundation and Charles Koch Institute.
