Bill Calvin "is a theoretical neurobiologist (although he also answers to biological anthropologist) whose brain research is concerned with both circuits for higher intellectual function and the up-from-the-apes evolutionary story. Bill is a affiliate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington; an affiliate of Emory University's Living Links Center; and an advisory board member of the Foundation for the Future and NOVA's TV series on evolution. He is the author of many scholarly books and articles on Darwinian processes, the emergence of intelligence, and the evolution of syntax, but also writes books for general readers, the most recent of which is How Brains Think, part of the widely translated Science Masters series. His most recent books include A Brief History of the Mind,Lingua ex Machina: Reconciling Darwin and Chomsky with the Human Brain (coauthored by the linguist Derek Bickerton) and the forthcoming Cool, Crash, and Burn: The Once and Future Climate for Human Evolution, an expansion of "The Great Climate Flip-Flop" (Atlantic Monthly, 1998), and Global Fever."
