The hilarity of her statement is that in most town squares across America, or on the effective equivalent of the town square, the mass media, I cannot express my opinion openly without fear of recrimination. I think thats quite obvious then that we are living in a state of fear.

Curiouser and curiouser: "Tyranny's Outpost" (1996) by J.A. Wilkins & R.R. Draude: "The year is 2368. A gang of privateers led by Amanda Callin is routinely savaging the fleets of interstellar cargo ships that carry freight between Earth’s twelve colonies. The raiders attack without mercy, leaving death and destruction in their wake as they disappear back into uncharted space. The best efforts of the authorities to track down the marauders and bring them to justice have been ineffective."

The names and dates have been changed to protect the innocent.
