Stephen F. Gates "is senior vice president, legal and general counsel for ConocoPhillips.
"Gates served at BP and Amoco for 23 years, where he was executive vice president and group chief of staff of BP after serving as vice president and general counsel of Amoco. He also served as senior vice president and general counsel of FMC Corporation in 2000 to 2001. Gates joined ConocoPhillips in May 2003 after being a partner at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw in Chicago, Ill.
"Gates is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a member of the American Bar Association and the Association of General Counsel and Chairman of the American Petroleum Institute General Law Committee. He serves on the board of the Houston Grand Opera, the National Legal Center for the Public Interest, the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR) and the Appleseed Foundation. He also serves on the General Counsel Committee of the National Center for State Courts, the Executive Committee of the Civil Justice Reform Group, the Executive Committee of the Institute for Energy Law and the ABA Task Force on Attorney-Client Privilege. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Center on Lawyers and the Professional Services Industry at Harvard Law School.
"Gates was born in 1946 in Clearwater, Fla. He was awarded a BA, magna cum laude, in economics, from Yale University in 1968. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School and JD, cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1972." [1]
