Following includes a list of the '''599 potential cigarette additives''' that the five major American cigarette companies submitted to the [[U.S. Department of Health and Human Services]] in 1994. The list used to be confidential, and has now has been made public. Many of these ingredients are approved as food additives, but their properties are changed when burned.
