in 1994 [[Philip Morris]] tried to float a European version of 'junkman' [[Steve Milloy]]'s [[TASSC]] (The Advancement of Sound Science Coalition) [http://electricwords.emfacts.com/junk/pmdocs/2025493120.html] which had proved so successful in the USA. When they ran into problems, the job was handed over to IEA which was controlled by [[Lord Harris of High Cross]], a long-time tobacco supporter (and sometime director) who had founded both the [[Adam Smith Institute]] and [[FOREST]] ( Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco.) -- the UK version of Philip Morris's [[National Smoker's Smokers Alliance]] (NSA).
The IEA had been founded to promote [[Frederich von Hayek]]'s monetarist ideas, and to mount a crusade to reverse Britain's "slide into socialism". It was immensely successful; the IEA sparked the emergence of hundreds of institutes in Europe with broadly similar philosophies and operating styles.
