Thus far in the war on terrorism, as executed by the United States and the coalition of the willing in Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom II, NATO has not played a significant role in Post-war Iraq.
However, it seems that this is soon to change, as announced to CNN by Iraqi interim foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari and related in a December 5, 2003 AFP news story (Militia plan gathers steam in Iraq, NATO security role welcomed):
- "Plans to deploy former armed opponents of Saddam Hussein to quell the bloody insurgency in Iraq gathered steam as the country's interim leadership lined up behind the United States in calling for a NATO role to help restore security."
See Iraqi Civil Defense Corps and new Iraqi army for news items regarding some proposals for this new force in Iraq.
