Organizing for Action (OFA) is the latest incarnation of Organizing for America, the Obama campaign organization that was moved into the Democratic National Committee in 2009.

The new OFA was started in 2013 by Barack Obama and his team including Jim Messina, Jon Carson and others who have also worked for or financially supported Obama. It was calling itself "non-partisan" and "educational," but was composed of the massive database of Obama's 2012 campaign funders. [1]

Donors and Funds

OFA is self-described as a grassroots organization, but as of April 2013, 16 people accounted for nearly a quarter of the $4.8 million collected for the 2012 Election. [2] Of the top 16 donors, nine are Obama "campaign bundlers," fundraisers who seek out funds from well-connected family, friends, and acquaintances to then deliver the funds in a "bundle." The 16 donors include (in order): [3]

  • Philip Munger ($250,000): philanthropist, academic and long-time contributor to Democratic causes
  • John Goldman ($125,000): former chairman of Willis Insurance Service of California, Inc.
  • Nicola M. Miner ($125,000): daughter of Bob Miner, co-founder of Oracle Corp and wife of John Mailer Anderson, novelit and screenwriter
  • Orin S. Kramer ($75,000): chairman of hedge fund Kramer Spellman LP and former Clinton administration transition team adviser
  • Ryan Smith ($50,875): CEO of Qualtrics, a Utah company that creates Web-based software for surveys

  • Barbara Grasseschi ($50,000): bundler who raised at least $200,000 for Obama's re-election efforts and is married to Crabb.
  • John Morgan ($50,000): partner at Morgan & Morgan, the Florida law firm that employs former Gov. and Republican-turned-Democrat Charlie Crist. Morgan is also a campaign bundler who raised at least $500,000 for Obama's re-election efforts.

  • William H. Freeman ($50,000): campaign bundler who raised at least $500,000 for Obama's re-election efforts.

About 60 percent of OFA's funds are from donors who donated less than $250 and were not identified.
