National Evaluation Systems, Incorporated, (NES) is a corporation active in the increasingly lucrative business of teacher assessment. Based in western Massachusetts, it also has offices in California, New York and Texas. According to its web pages, the multimillion operations of NES include contracts in the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oklahoma, and Texas.

NES is a major provider of customized state assessments for teacher certification, who works under contract with state educational agencies, developing and administering licensing tests for prospective teachers who want to enter the profession, teach a new subject, or work in a new state. The company’s work involves assessment in more than 100 fields, professional teaching skills, and the basics of reading, writing, and mathematics.

In 2006 Forbes magazine reported that the London-based media conglomerate, Pearson PLC, had agreed to buy the National Evaluation Systems Inc., although the terms of the purchase were not disclosed. According to this report, Pearson officials said that NES had sales of $73 million in 2005 and gross assets of $16 million at the end of the year.

The acquisition of NES by Pearson not only enabled the second largest publishing conglomerate in the US to enter the teacher certification market, but officials said that it was expected to enhance adjusted earnings per share and return on invested capital from 2007, its first full year.
