Biographical Information
"Lord Brooke was born during the last war in a council house in the village of Alverthorpe, nr Wakefield in Yorkshire. After leaving grammar school at age 16 he joined the Civil Service – the Inland Revenue. He quickly found Civil Service trade union activities and politics appealed more than tax work. So in 1964 he moved to London to become a full time trade union officer with the Inland Revenue Staff Federation. Eventually he became general secretary and was involved with its merging with two other civil service unions to create the present PCS – the Public Service Union – in 1998 when he retired early.

His interests and activities range over transport, European Union legislation, volunteering and especially drink and drug issues – where he is a Patron and Trustee of several charities in this field."
