Lord Brian Griffiths of Fforestfach

"Born in Fforestfach, Swansea in 1941, Brian Griffiths was educated at Dynevor Grammar School and the London School of Economics. He taught at the London School of Economics from 1965-76, and was appointed Professor of Banking and International Finance at City University in 1976. He held the position of Dean of the City University Business School from 1982-85.

"He served at No. 10 Downing Street as Head of the Prime Minister's Policy Unit from 1985 until 1990. In his role as Special Advisor to Margaret Thatcher he was responsible for domestic policy-making and was one of the chief architects of the Government's privatisation and deregulation programmes, as well as education and broadcasting policies during Margaret Thatcher's term in office. On leaving No. 10 he was made a life peer.

"Since then, Lord Griffiths has been Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs International and an International Advisor to Goldman Sachs concerned with strategic issues in their UK, European and Asian operations and business development activities worldwide. He is Chairman of Land Securities Trillium and a non-executive Director of Times Newspaper Holdings Ltd., Herman Miller Inc., ServiceMaster and English, Welsh and Scottish Railway.

"From 1991-1993 he was Chairman of the School Examination and Assessment Council and from 1991-2000 Chairman of the Centre for Policy Studies. He is also the Chairman of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lambeth Trust and Christian Responsibility in Public Affairs and has written extensively and lectures on ethics and business."
