Jack F. Matlock, Jr., "served 35 years in the American Foreign Service, from 1956 to 1991, and was U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union from March 1987 to August 1991. He has held academic posts since 1991 and is currently adjunct professor of international relations, Columbia University." [1] He was director for European and Soviet affairs, National Security Council, 1983-86; ambassador to Czechoslovakia, 1981-83.
He is the author of Superpower Illusions (2011).
