The Independent Journalism Centre (IJC) "is an independent, non-profit organization based in Lagos, Nigeria. Its mandate is to work for the independence of the media and extend the frontiers of freedom of expression in Nigeria. It executes programs in research, documentation, campaigns, publishing and training. Our traning programs seek to produce technically solid journalists its emergence and sustenance in Nigeria as a serious programme. The centre, publishes regular alerts on freedom of expression rights violations, and Media Monitor, an authoritative weekly digest of developments within the Nigerian media scene. It also publishes Green News Monitor, a digest on environmental journalism in Nigeria." [1]

"The centre works in collaboration with many international organizations like Alliance Francaise, Goethe Institut, Panos Institute, Friedrich Ebert Foundation, among others on media training, research and publications." [2]

In 1997 the NED channeled a US$36,000 grant to the IJC through the Panos Institute.

It is a member of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX).
