A herdshare program is a program in which a farm sells "shares" of its animal herd to consumers. The shareholders then receive animal products (such as milk) regularly as their "share" of the herd. Herdshares are sometimes used as a way to go around laws banning the sale of raw milk or other raw dairy products. Because the animal's owner is allowed to drink their own animal's milk, herdshare participants argue that, as owners of a share of the animal herd, they can legally drink the raw milk.
