Goal

The Climate Change Portal needs volunteers to help build articles on the issues under discussion in the negotiation of a possible new international agreement to follow on from the Kyoto Protocol, which expires at the end of 2012. In the lead up to the COP15 meeting in Copenhagen in December 2009, the Climate Change Portal aims to demystify the issues under discussion, document the main players in the negotiations and help unmask corporate and government greenwashing.

General help

How-to

  1. First, you'll need to log in to edit (this prevents vandalism and spam). Click on the "Log in" link at the top-right corner of your browser window. If you haven't registered with SourceWatch, all you need is an email address (it won't go on any mailing lists) and it just takes a minute. Click here to register and then come back.
  2. Go to Things you can do page.
    • Note: It's best to right-click that link and others on this page (or for Mac users, open-apple-click the link) to open them in a new window. This allows you to easily refer back to these instructions.
  3. We will use the example of the article on the International Maritime Organization. For this example, open that page.
    • Tip: Click the Edit tab on an open page to begin editing the page. You can also edit sections of a page by clicking the Edit link on the right side at the top of a section.
    • After clicking the edit tab:
  4. Choose a section. For this example we will update the page to include material from this article. Scroll down to IMO and Climate Change section and add a new sub-heading "October 2008 Meeting". See Subhead.jpg
  5. Then add a brief not on what the media release stated. In this case it is described,

If the IMO was under pressure to table proposals for consideration at the COP14 meeting in Poznan in December 2008, it didn't show it. While the Poznan meeting is intended to develop a framework for negotiations aimed at concluding by the COP15 meeting in Copenhagen, the IMO foreshadowed only that it would establish a "working group" to consider greenhouse gas emissions and was "working in accordance with an ambitious work plan, due to culminate, in 2009, with the adoption of a binding instrument. IMO is working to have measures in place to control GHG emissions from international shipping before the first commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol expires at the end of 2011."

  6. Add a reference footnote for the incident report. Please refer to the SourceWatch article, Help:References.

  7. <ref>[http://www.imo.org/home.asp?topic_id=1709&doc_id=9753 "Ship emissions high on agenda at IMO environment meeting: Preview: Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) - 58th session: 6 to 10 October 2008"], International Maritime Organization, October 2008.</ref>
  8. Your entry will look like this in the editing window:

    IMOemissions.jpg

  9. When you save the page, a numbered footnote will appear that looks like this:

    1) ↑ "Ship emissions high on agenda at IMO environment meeting: Preview: Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) - 58th session: 6 to 10 October 2008", International Maritime Organization, October 2008.

  10. Save the Page: When you are finished, enter a summary of what you have done to the page in the summary box below the editing window (like "Added IMO meeting details"). You can then preview your work by clicking "Show preview" or save your work by clicking "Save page."

That's it! You can see this completed example Completed.jpg.
