"Sept. 22, 2003--Allied Capital Corporation (NYSE:ALD) today announced the retirement of George C. Williams Jr. after 44 years of service. Mr. Williams joined Allied Capital in 1959 as founding employee of the company. Throughout his tenure with Allied Capital, he served in numerous officer positions and served as President or Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Allied Capital (or its predecessor companies) from 1964 until 1992. In 1992, Mr. Williams was named Chairman Emeritus of the company and has remained on the Board of Directors since that time...

"Mr. Williams was formerly Chairman of the National Association of Small Business Investment Companies (NASBIC) and was a recipient of its first Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1995, he was the recipient of the Ernst & Young Master Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Mid-Atlantic region. He is a former director of Riggs National Bank and has served on the boards of numerous privately and publicly held corporations. He has also served as an Executive in Residence at the University of Virginia, McIntire School of Commerce and was awarded an honorary membership in Beta Gamma Sigma, the international honor society for achievement in business. Mr. Williams is a member of the University's Jefferson Society and Lawn Society.

"Before joining Allied Capital, Mr. Williams served in the China, Burma, and India theatre of operations during World War II. He received a B.S. degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia in 1950. Between 1950 and 1959, he served as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and as a Professional Staff Member of the U.S. Congress." [1]
