Fred Bliss

Fred Bliss is a consultant to the Global Partnership Initiative for Plant Breeding Capacity Building.

"Fred Bliss is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis and retired from Monsanto. From 1998 until January, 2010, he worked at Seminis Vegetable Seeds, now the Vegetable Division of Monsanto, in R&D, serving as Dir. of Worldwide plant breeding, strategic planning committee, Dir. of Technology Support, and Sr. Dir. of Special R&D Projects. While at U.W.-Madison and UC Davis, he taught courses in plant biology and plant breeding and served as major professor for some 30 M.S. and Ph.D. students. He has experience working on projects in Brazil and Honduras on breeding beans for increased biological nitrogen fixation and in Nigeria where he helped establish the University of Ife and initiated breeding programs for cowpea and tomato in 1966. Fred is currently a consultant to the GIPB, developing methods and tools to define and measure plant breeding capacity. He began working to develop a GIPB program in 2005, by writing a position paper on “global and regional strategies to strengthen plant breeding capacity”."
