He initiated the Community-Based Collaboratives Research Consortium (cbcrc.org), with over 400 members currently representing 18 countries, and is lead author of Collaboration: A Guide for Environmental Advocates, working with environmental advocates and NGO’s The Wilderness Society and the National Audubon Society.

He is co-founder and core faculty member of the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute/
