J. Daniel O'Flaherty

J. Daniel O’Flaherty "became Vice President of the National Foreign Trade Council in Washington in 1987. He became Executive Director of the US-South Africa Business Council when it was formed by the NFTC in 1993. He has worked on range of trade policy issues with NFTC member companies, especially unilateral economic sanctions issues on which he helps to manage the NFTC-sponsored USA*ENGAGE coalition. His work also includes US-China trade relations, Vietnam normalization and commercial relations with the former Soviet Union. His involvement with South Africa began in the late 1970's and early 1980's when, as a Senior Associate of the Carnegie Endowment, he was joint author of a study by Carnegie on US relations with South Africa. The Business Council represents US companies doing business in South Africa and serves as the private sector secretariat of the Gore-Mbeki US-South Africa Binational Commission.

"Mr. O’Flaherty has been a professional staff member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Assistant Director of the Group of Thirty, a consultative group on international monetary and economic policy. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, co-chairs the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Study Group on South and Southern Africa and is a member of the State Department advisory Sanctions Working Group and the USTR Trade Advisory Committee on Africa. He has written on foreign economic policy for numerous newspapers and journals, including Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy and the Washington Quarterly. He is a graduate of Williams College, Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and Harvard University."
