MARSH FORMS CRISIS CONSULTING PRACTICE UNDER AMBASSADOR L. PAUL BREMER
"NEW YORK, October 11, 2001 - Marsh Inc. / Marsh, Inc., the world's leading risk and insurance services firm, today announced it has established a crisis consulting practice that will respond to the need for integrated and comprehensive crisis solutions covering all aspects of a business's operations. Ambassador L. Paul Bremer, one of the world's foremost authorities on terrorism, will serve as Chairman of the practice.
"Concurrently, Marsh and Control Risks Group LLC / Control Risks Group LLC jointly announced an agreement to provide a full range of political risk assessment services for clients' worldwide operations.
"'The creation of our new practice provides expanded capabilities for our clients by integrating the terrorism and political-risk expertise of Ambassador Bremer and his team with Marsh's existing business continuity and crisis management resources,' said John T. Sinnott, Chairman and Chief Executive officer of Marsh Inc. 'We've been working to develop the practice for some time, but recent events have made it more significant and timely.'
"Ambassador Bremer had a 23-year career in the U.S. Diplomatic Service. In 1999, Speaker of the House of Representatives Dennis Hastert appointed Ambassador Bremer as Chairman of the National Commission on Terrorism. Earlier, he was Ambassador-at-Large for Counter Terrorism under President Ronald Reagan. He is a prominent speaker on terrorism in policy forums and has served as a frequent expert commentator during television news coverage of the September 11 events. Andrew R. Daniels, a Managing Director of Marsh, will serve as President and Chief Operating Officer of the practice.
"The new Marsh practice will formulate and review crisis management plans for clients, according to Ambassador Bremer.
"'Companies need to establish plans to deal with a broad range of crisis events, such as natural disasters, product recalls and terrorism. These plans should be comprehensive and integrated throughout the enterprise, from the boardroom to the factory floor,' he said.
"Ambassador Bremer added that the new agreement with Control Risks will further complement and strengthen the capabilities being developed with the new Marsh practice.
"He said that while events of the last month underscore the importance for businesses to have an accurate and current assessment of their risks relating to terrorism and political violence, those exposures are not new. 'Over the past 30 years, more than 80 percent of all terrorist acts against U.S. targets have been directed against American businesses,' Ambassador Bremer noted.
"He added that work also has been underway for several months on the agreement between Marsh and Control Risks. The agreement gives businesses coordinated access to a broad range of political risk expertise services for their operations or acquisitions in all parts of the world. Control Risks will provide political risk analysis and investigative services. Marsh will provide risk consulting services and arrange insurance to manage risks associated with cross-border operations and investments, including political risk, currency inconvertibility, trade credit and kidnap and ransom insurance.
"Edward Grubb, President & CEO of Control Risks Group, said, 'Our effort with Marsh gives businesses access to a full range of services they need to anticipate problems, understand risks and take appropriate measures to protect employees and operations against the threat of terrorism and political violence.'
