Cotton Mather Lindsay was a professor of economics at Clemson University in California. He was also a life-long tout for the tobacco industry. He prominently features in the tobacco industry document archives under a number of different variations on his name: CM Lindsay, Cotton M Lindsay, C Mather Lindsay, C 'Matt' Lindsay, Mather Lindsay and Matt Lindsay.
