Clayton Yeutter was on the board of directors for British-American Tobacco (BAT Industries). He was also very active in the Republican political scene.

He was appointed Secretary of Agriculture by President HW Bush and then served as domestic policy counselor before leaving to join the Bush campaign. According to the Advocacy Institute, under President Reagan, Yeutter served as U.S. Trade Representative and led the effort to force open Asian markets to US tobacco products. This successful effort added millions of dollars in sales to Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds business also.

While serving as Trade Representative and pressuring foreign governments for the expansion of US tobacco markets, he acquired family stock options in Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds worth $30,000-$100,000, but this was not reported until the day before he left the position. After he was nominated for Secretary of Agriculture by Bush, he sold his stock options. [2]
