Background

The company states that while it is calling for bids for a 1320MW project "it has been decided to permit the selected developer to establish an Additional Unit of 660 MW at the selected plant location. To expedite the process, the Government of Uttar Pradesh shall facilitate the Land Acquisition and Water allocation for such Additional Unit."[1]

The project was issed Terms of Reference on March 11, 2010. Water will be used from Lower Ganga Canal.[2]

In 2012, the UP government decided to overcome any remaining obstacles in order to restart the stalled project. Reports noted that the project has coal link available from Chandipada coal block in Odisha, that 900 acres of land have been acquired, and that the project has been approved to draw 53 cusecs of water from the Lower Ganga Canal. The remaining hurdle is environmental clearance from MoEF. In order to secure early clearance, officials from the UP Power Department made a presentation before the expert advisory committee of MoEF seeking early clearance.[3]
